The Village Lock-up (the Cage)
The Cage · 18th-century lock-up, Grade II listed
Tucked into the corner of the churchyard behind the bushes, easy to miss if you're not looking – the Cage is Tollesbury's 18th-century village lock-up. A small square timber-framed building with a pyramidal roof and an acorn finial at the apex, it has a metal plate on the door inscribed: "Village lock-up or cage, AD 1700."
Those detained would be locked in until sober – or until someone came to pay their fine, whichever came first. With six public houses within a short walk of the Square, it is reasonable to assume the Cage saw regular use.
