Step inside The Centre and you’re in a building that has quietly worn many hats. It began life in 1850 as the Tollesbury Congregational Church – and, remarkably, a chapel it remains, holding its Sunday services to this day. The rest of the week, though, it belongs to the whole village.
Behind those Victorian walls is a surprisingly generous hall, along with a schoolroom, two smaller meeting rooms and a fully equipped kitchen – enough to host almost anything Tollesbury can dream up. A recent fit-out added a professional stage and lighting rig, making it one of the best-equipped community venues on the Essex coast. In a single week it might turn its hand to theatre and cinema, yoga and concerts, talks and meetings – then open its doors again on Sunday morning as the church it has always been.
