Tollesbury Village Station
This was the heart of it: Tollesbury Station, the main stop for the village, on Station Road.
It was one of the two prettiest stations on the whole line, with a small goods yard, a cart road and neat wooden buildings; the track crossed Station Road on an open crossing to a run-round loop beyond. When the railway first arrived in October 1904, the only building in the village dressed with bunting to greet it was the King’s Head, where the official party went for their celebratory meal in the afternoon sun. For a while the station was the village’s link to the wider world – Liverpool Street was some forty-nine miles and a slow two hours away.
