Mell Farm

1906

Mell Farm sits where the village edge gives way to the marshes, one of the outlying farms that spread across this corner of Tollesbury as the old Tollesbury Hall estate was broken up and the marshland reclaimed piece by piece for grazing and crops. It is the “plough” half of the village’s old name for itself – “the village of plough and sail” – made solid: while the men of the waterfront went to sea, the land behind them was farmed right down to the water’s edge. The walk passes through the farm between the marsh and Mell Road.
